Using H (5.00mm) Hook and White cotton yarn (gauge 4~ medium worsted weight)

To make the cupcake topping:

ch 12

Round 1: starting in 2nd ch from the hook sc 11, DO NOT TURN (begin working on other side of the original ch), sc 11, DO NOT TURN continue working in next st

Row 2: sc 2, hdc 2, dc 3, hdc 2, sc 2, slst to join, ch 1, turn

Row 3: sk 1 st, sc, hdc, sk 1 st,  (4 dc all in next st) X3, sk 1 st, hdc, sc, slst, ch 1, turn

Row 4: sk 1st st, sc 15, slst, ch 1, (DO NOT TURN, continue working brim along bottom), (slst, ch 3, 3 tdc all in same st), 3 tc in each of the next 9 sts, (3 tdc, ch 3, slst) all in next st, slst, F/O leaving tail for sewing

With Hot Orange yarn, let’s make the cupcake base:

ch 16, leaving a long starting tail for sewing

Row 1: starting in 2nd ch from hook sc 15, ch 1, turn

Row 2: hdc, (BPhdc, hdc 2) X4, BPhdc, hdc, ch 1, turn

Row 3: hdc, (FPhdc, hdc 2) X4, FPhdc, hdc, ch 1, turn

Rows 4 and 5: Repeat rows 2 and 3

Rows 6 and 7: Repeat rows 2 and 3, at the end of row 7 F/O, leaving long tail for sewing

Flower (using Hot Blue yarn): ch 16, starting in 2nd ch from hook (sc & dc in same st), *(dc & sc in next st), (sc & dc in next st)*, repeat *to* across, F/O leaving a tail for sewing

Sew top and bottom of the cupcake together: Using long tail that you left when starting the original chain, sew orange base onto back of white topping using a whip stitch just above the ruffle. Be sure the right sides of both pieces are facing the same way.

Let’s start the granny square rounds:

Round 1: With right side facing you, join Black Currant (purple) yarn to the bottom right corner of the cupcake base with a slst, ch 2, 3 dc in same st as join (note: 3 dc in same st = “shell” from here on out), ch 1.

Going up the side of the cupcake “shell” in a row near the middle of the cupcake base, ch 1, “shell” in a row near the top of the cupcake base, ch 1, “shell” in first st of the topping above the ruffle, ch 1, sk 2 sts, “shell”, ch 1, sk 1 st.

To create the top corner: 3 tc** all in the next st (**the two top corners in this row are the ONLY time we are using tc for the shell), ch 3, 3 more tc all in that same st. *Ch 1, sk 1 st, shell* X3 (you now have 3 shells across the top of the cupcake). Create the next top corner: ch 1, 3 tc all in the next st, ch 3, 3 more tc all in that same st.

Going down the side of the cupcake: ch 1, sk 1 st, shell, ch 1, sk 2 sts, shell (this should be in the st just above the ruffle), ch 1, shell in a row near the top of the cupcake base, ch 1, shell in a row near the middle of the cupcake base, ch 1, shell in the bottom left corner of the cupcake base, ch 3, shell again in that same st, ch 1, sk 3 sts, shell, (ch 1, sk 2 sts, shell) X2,  sk 3 sts, shell in same st as first shell, ch 3, slst to first dc to join, ch 2, turn.

Round 2: shell in 3 ch sp of the corner, ch 3, shell again in same sp, *ch 1, shell in next ch sp* X4, shell in 3 ch sp of the corner, ch 3, shell again in same sp, *ch 1, shell in next ch sp* X5, shell in 3 ch sp of the corner, ch 3, shell again in same sp, *ch 1, shell in next ch sp* X4, shell in 3 ch sp of the corner, ch 3, shell again in same sp, *ch 1, shell in next ch sp* X5, ch 1, slst to first dc to join, slst 3 (to move to corner), ch 2

Round 3: shell in 3 ch sp of the corner, ch 3, shell again in same sp, *ch 1, shell in next ch sp* X5, shell in 3 ch sp of the corner, ch 3, shell again in same sp, *ch 1, shell in next ch sp* X6, shell in 3 ch sp of the corner, ch 3, shell again in same sp, *ch 1, shell in next ch sp* X5, shell in 3 ch sp of the corner, ch 3, shell again in same sp, *ch 1, shell in next ch sp* X6, ch 1, slst to first dc to join, ch 1, turn

Round 4-9: Continue the same technique as Rounds 2 & 3, placing a shell in each ch sp, then ch 1. Complete a shell, ch 3, and another shell in each corner. At the end of Round 9, F/O purple.

Round 10: Join white yarn in the ch sp of the bottom right corner, with RIGHT SIDE of blanket facing you, ch 2. Complete one more round of the granny square technique: Complete a shell, ch 3, and another shell all in the corner, ch 1, place a shell in the next ch sp, then ch 1; repeat all the way around. Slst to 1st dc to join, ch 2, DO NOT TURN.

Round 11: *5 dc all in the middle dc of your shell, slst in the ch sp*, repeat *to* around, slst to join, F/O.

Attach rose to top of cupcake, using long tail to sew it on, taking care to sew only through the top stitches so your stitching doesn’t show on the back of your work, weave in all ends.
