Abbreviations:

  • mc~ magic circle
  • slst~ slip stitch
  • ch(s)~ chain(s)
  • sc~ single crochet
  • hdc~ half double crochet
  • dc~ double crochet
  • tc~ triple crochet
  • st(s)~ stitch(es)
  • dcINC~ double crochet increase (2 dc in the same stitch)
  • hdcINC~ half double crochet increase (2 hdc in the same stitch)
  • hdcDEC~ half double crochet decrease (Yarn Over (Y/O), insert hook into st, Y/O, pull through st, Y/O, insert hook into next st, Y/O, pull through st, Y/O, pull through all loops left on hook)
  • F/O~ finish off

BODY with G hook and Yellow yarn, WORKING IN ROUNDS:

Round 1: dc 12 in mc, join in top of 1st dc with slst, ch 1

Round 2: dcINC in each st, join with slst, ch 1 (24 dc)

Round 3: (dcINC, dc) X12, join with slst, ch 1 (36 dc)

Round 4: (dcINC, dc in next 2 sts) X12, join with slst, ch 1 (48 dc)

Round 5: (dcINC, dc in next 3 sts) X12, join with slst, ch 1 (60 dc)

Round 6: (dcINC, dc in next 4 sts) X12, join with slst, F/O, weave in ends (72 dc)

USING PURPLE begin making “ears hat”:

Row 1: With right side facing, join in any st. Starting in same st as join, sc 35, ch 1, turn

Row 2: sc 9, ch 11

Row 3: Starting in 2nd ch from hook hdcINC, hdc 9, slst to next st in the purple hat row, ch 1, turn (11 hdc)

Row 4: hdc 10, hdcINC, ch 1, turn (12 hdc)

Row 5: hdcINC, hdc 11, slst to next st on top of hat, ch 1, turn (13 hdc)

Row 6: hdc 11, hdcDEC, ch 1, turn (12 hdc)

Row 7: hdcDEC, hdc 10, slst to next st on top of hat, slst in next st, DO NOT TURN

Continue working across top of hat and create 2nd ear:

Repeat Rows 2-7

sc 9, slst next st in round 6 (yellow), ch 1, turn

Finishing Row:

sk slst, sc 8, slst, slst (bottom corner of ear), working up the side: sc 4, hdc 2, dc 5

tc 8 across top of ear, working down the side of ear: dc 5, hdc 2, sc 4

working across top of head: slst , sc 7, slst, slst (corner of ear), working up the side: sc 4, hdc 2, dc 5

tc 8 across top of ear, working down side of ear: dc 5, hdc 2, sc 4

working remaining side of hat: slst, sc 8, slst to yellow, F/O, weave in ends

Make the Beak:

Using Hot Orange: Working mc: ch 2, dc 3, ch 1, sc 2, ch 1, dc, ch 1, sc 2, ch 1, dc 3, slst to center, F/O, leaving tail for sewing

Make the Wings (make 2):

With Yellow, Round 1: Working mc: ch 2, tc 3, dc 3, tc, dc 3, tc 3, slst to center

Round 2: [ch 3, slst in 1st ch] (this is a picot), *slst to next st, picot*, repeat from *to* around, slst to center, F/O leaving long tail for attaching to body

Make the feet:

With right side facing: Join Orange to a stitch about 3 sts right of center on the bottom of the chick.

Ch 9, starting in 2nd ch from hook slst 4, ch 5, starting in 2nd ch from hook slst 4, ch 5, starting in 2nd ch from hook slst 4, slst up the original ch (toward body), slst to original st on body, F/O, weave in ends.

Start 2nd foot 5 sts to the left of 1st foot, and repeat the same steps above.

Assembly:

Sew beak on the front center of the chick. I only sewed the top edge to allow the beak to lift up for a 3 dimensional effect. Sew wings onto either side, letting some hang off of the body. Using black or blue yarn, make French knots for the eyes.
